5 Reasons Why Songwriters Should Collaborate
5 Reasons Why Songwriters Should Collaborate Suzy S. This article was originally published on Soundfly and is being shared as part of Songwriting Week! Join the conversation on social media (#SongwritingWeek) for even more tips, articles, and resources. So many musicians and songwriters stress the importance of collaboration. But without knowing how collaboration could benefit your work, why would you share an idea youâve spent countless hours thinking about, only to open yourself up to criticism? As it turns out, all those advice-givers really are on to something â" collaboration can tease out new ideas you hadnât considered before, help you get past roadblocks, and even validate your idea. Here are five reasons why collaboration is one of the most helpful things you can do to improve your art. 1. Collaboration forces you to articulate your ideas to other people. One of the most difficult parts of being an artist is clearly explaining your ideas so that other people understand them. You may know exactly what youâre trying to tell the audience with that story about your break-up, but the audience may have no idea what youâre referring to. When you talk your ideas out with other people, you can explain the thinking behind them and collectively come up with the clearest way to articulate the idea to others. (And if you need further help developing your ideas, consider signing up for our new songwriting course!) 2. It helps you play to your strengths and accept your weaknesses. In order to collaborate with other people, you must first understand what your personal strengths and weaknesses are. If you claim to be a world-renowned MC, but you canât keep a steady rhythm for your life, your project is going to fall apart. If you are up-front about your out-of-whack rhythm skills, you can find a drummer or beatboxer who can improve your project. Bring to the table what you know youâre good at and find a friend who can compliment your weaknesses. 3. It reminds you that your project is part of something bigger. It can be easy to forget that one section of a song youâre working on is part of a much larger work when you concentrate on it for so long. Working with other people helps you remember that what youâre working on is combined with many other parts to create something wonderful. Check in every once and a while with your fellow collaborators and see where they are in their part of the project. It can inspire you in new ways and help you remember why youâre working so hard on your section. Although everyone is working on something different, having collaborators helps remind you that everyone is working towards one larger goal. 4. You have real deadlines to hit. When weâre working on something that is only for ourselves, itâs easy to get lost in procrastination. We are only letting ourselves down in these situations, so without a ton of self-drive, a lot of these projects are never completed. When we work with other people, there is a greater sense of deadlines because missing them impacts everyone. If the group sets up a timeline for the project, it will be easier to keep track of deadlines and make sure the project is completed in a timely manner. 5. Itâs an easy way to gain fans!! One of the best benefits of working with other musicians is that youâre opened up to a whole new set of fans! If your sound is similar to, but with a unique spin on the work of the person youâre collaborating with, youâre sure to open up the door to many fans coming your way. People are always looking for new music, and what better way than to find it through their favorite artists?! Even if your acts are completely different, youâll get your music in front of an audience you never would have found before, and you can bet that fans respect artists that their favorite musicians are into! Sharing fan bases makes for easier collaboration on songs, shows, and many other aspects of your musical career. We are all still learning as musicians, and what better way than to learn from each other? Collaboration exercises your brain while producing tremendous work. And if it doesnât work out? Learn from your mistakes this time and try again. Everyone works differently, and before long youâll find the right type of collaborators for you. Interested in Private Lessons? 4 Fantastic Tips for Studying Abroad in Italy
4 Fantastic Tips for Studying Abroad in Italy Mac Are you planning on studying abroad in Italy in the near future? If so, youre destined to have a wonderful time! In this article, Italian teacher Liz T. gives you four very important tips for your educational stay in Italy Education in Italy If you have the chance to study abroad while youâre in high school or in college, you should definitely study in Italy! Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding opportunities of your life; academically, culturally, and socially. Italy has so many wonderful cities that are friendly to international students, such as Florence, Bologna, and Sienna. Moreover, the education in Italy is top quality, with accredited schools such as the University of Florence and the University of Rome. Before you solidify your choice to study abroad in Italy, look over these tips to help you make the most of your experience studying abroad! 1. Learn the Language Before You Go Try and learn Italian as much as you can at home before you go. If you learn the pronunciation and the sound of the language, youll feel more comfortable as a foreigner. Itd be best to practice speaking, writing, reading, and hearing the language in all platforms. If you need to learn Italian fast, Id recommend consuming newspapers, television shows, movies, and radio broadcasts to get a feel for the language. Vocabulary Its also recommended to find some useful Italian phrases you can use for when you first arrive. Itll come in handy to express yourself in certain situations, such as when you visit banks, laundromats, restaurants, and grocery stores. One great way to practice this vocabulary is through flash cards! On the plane ride over to Italy you could make yourself some flashcards and test yourself. The vocab should consist of basic topics, such as numbers, months, food, colors, parts of the body, and so on. Flashcards are a proven memorization tactic for vocabulary, so make it a habit to practice them as much as possible. 2. Experience the Culture Although Im sure youll be studying very hard in your classes, donât forget to experience the arts and culture of the new Italian community youre living in! You should soak up everything you can; museums, restaurants, theaters anything and everything! Maybe youll discover some common Italian stereotypes that you only ever hear about in movies. Dont be afraid to challenge yourself and go out, meet new people, and see new places. If you stay in your dorm room the majority of your stay, youll miss the chances to hang out with people your own age. Italy has its fair share of night clubs and bars where young people gather at all hours of the day. It would also be a great idea for you to start conversations in Italian. As an incentive, you can offer to teach your Italian friend(s) your native language. There are a lot of organizations abroad, as well as meetup groups, that specialize in bringing young people together in exchange for learning their language and culture. Its easier to coordinate than you may think! Travel Around Italy is known for itâs food, art, and music youll want to get a taste of all three! In order to get a well-rounded experience, try to travel around Italy as much as possible. Traveling throughout Italy is very easy; the trains run very fast and are quite affordable, flights are pretty cheap, and renting a car is a fairly easy task. Depending where you are, there are many great cities in the North to visit, such as Turin, Milan, Trieste, Venezia to the South Rome, Napoli, Florence, and the islands of Sicily and Sardegna. Each region has its own specialties that youre going to want to experience! See Also: 6 Tips How to Make the Most Out of Your Semester Abroad 3. Adapting to the Culture Living abroad can bring you many challenges if youre not used to the language, culture, and customs of a new city. The customs that you practice in your homeland are not going to be the same as they are in Italy. Here are some examples of Italian customs: Were Closed Businesses, stores, and restaurants are generally open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then closed until about 7 p.m. for Siesta time. That means restaurants do not usually serve dinner until 9 p.m. at night! I recommend planning your shopping in Italy around these Siesta closing times. Telling the Time 24 hours clocks are used in Italy, so 1 p.m. U.S. time would be 13:00, 2 p.m. would be 14:00, and midnight would be 24:00, and so on. Also, in lieu of the time difference, you should get your body used to being either six or nine hours ahead of your home country. For Here or To-Go In restaurants, you wont really see âTakeaway or To-Go orders. Even the chain coffee shops expect you to sit down and have coffee in the morning. Itâs very hard to find a âTo-Goâ cup on the run. Also, going out to eat can be a long process; to even get a menu, food, and the bill can take at least two hours, so make sure you plan for this! Seconds Please While food is much cheaper in Italy than in the States, know that portions may not be as big (they have several meals or courses a day, such as antipasti, insalta, primo corso, secondo corso). With that being said, the portions in Italy are generally bigger than the rest of the countries in Europe. My Brand Your favorite brands, like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Hersheyâs Chocolate, or Tylenol may not be available. Its definitely possible to find similar brands, but youll have to search for them in Italian. Plug It In The electric wall plugs are different in Italy. Shocking, isnt it? Youll need adapters to switch the voltage for all of your appliances, like your computer, hairdryer, alarm clock, and more. Adapters can be very expensive once youre abroad, so I recommend picking up a few in your homeland before you travel. 4. Stay Organized in Italy Make sure you have your finances and documents organized before you go to Italy. Moreover, plan to have your finances covered during each semester youre studying there. The most important things to get are: a current passport and a visa. Documentation Official processes for visas and documents can take anywhere from six to nine months, so itâs very important to start this process immediately. Youll need original copies, as well as signed documents of specific items. Make sure you fulfill all of the requirements before you begin travelling. Be warned that the police in Italy can stop you at anytime to look at your legal documents. You wouldnât want to arrive to your program late or be unable to complete it because you didnt have the proper legal documents sorted out. Finances Italy is currently using the euro, which is more expensive than the U.S. dollar. However, the exchange rates are changing everyday. You may be able to make or lose money depending on the rates. Check to see if your tuition payments are in dollars or euros and spend accordingly. You may need to convert currency before you start setting up logistics like your apartment, bills, medical needs, and anything of the utmost importance. Heres a huge recommendation in regard to your finances: keep your bank accounts from your home country and start a new bank account in Italy. This will allow you to have money in both currencies, as well as an Italian debit or credit card for emergencies. Communication Your current cellphone provider will most likely not work in Italy but if it does, youll probably be charged enormous fees. If you have an iPhone, you can try and get it unlocked so that you can use a different provider or an Italian simcard. If you want to tweak your iPhone for this reason, keep in mind that there are risks involved (damaging your software, losing information, losing warranty coverage, etc.). Another option for your phone is to suspend the service and only use it for wifi. Or if you dont even need wifi, you can keep your phone in airplane mode (which cuts it off from all wireless activities). Many chatting apps, such as Skype, Viber, or Whatsapp will allow you to text and call others for free or for low prices. If you decide to buy a new phone in Italy, you can get simcards from popular providers such as Orange, Vodaphone, and Movistar. Safe Travels! These are some tips I wish I would have known before studying abroad in Italy myself! I hope that youll take these tips into consideration while youre planning your semester studying abroad. Reciprocal Math Online Tutoring - Math Homework Help
Reciprocal Math Online Tutoring - Math Homework Help Math has many mathematical operations used to solve different kind of numerical, algebraically and exponential questions. Some of the most commonly used operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The reciprocal operation in math is the expression or term which when multiplied to the other term has a product of unity or one. Therefore the reciprocal operation for multiplication is division and the reciprocal operation for division is multiplication. This concept is very useful to solve many mathematical questions. Example 1: Find the reciprocal for the number 2? Solution: Reciprocal is the value when multiplied to 2 gives 1. Let the reciprocal number be x. This gives 2 * x = 1. Divide both sides of the equation by 2, to get x all by itself. (2 * x) /2 = 1 /2; x = 1/2. Hence reciprocal of 2 is 1/2 Example 2: Find the reciprocal for the following numbers a) 1/10. b) 2/5. Solution: The reciprocal of the given numbers are: a) Reciprocal is the value when multiplied to 1/10 gives 1. Let the reciprocal number be x. This gives (1/10) * x = 1. Multiply both sides of the equation by 10, to get x all by itself. (1/10 * x) *10 = 10; x = 10. Hence reciprocal of 1/10 is 10. b) Reciprocal is the value when multiplied to 2/5 gives 1. Let the reciprocal number be x. This gives (2/5) * x = 1. Multiply both sides of the equation by 5/2, to get x all by itself. (2/5 * x) (5/2) = 5/2; x = 5/2. Hence reciprocal of 2/5 is 5/2.

Critical Reasoning Question 7-High School Curriculum - Private Tutoring
Critical Reasoning Question 7-High School Curriculum BobbiM Feb 9, 2014 The local high school students have been clamoring for the freedom to design their own curricula. Allowing this would be as disastrous as allowing 3-year-olds to choose their own diets. These students have neither the maturity nor the experience to equal that of the professional educators now doing the job. Which of the following statements, if true, would most strengthen the above argument? A. High school students have less formal education than those who currently design the curricula. B. 3-year-olds do not, if left to their own devices, choose healthful diets. C. The local high school students are less intelligent than the average teenager. D. Individualized curricula are more beneficial to high school students than are the standard curricula, which are rigid and unresponsive to their particular strengths and weaknesses. E. The ability to design good curricula develops only after years of familiarity with educational life. Think you know the answer? The correct answer is E. first, we need to understand the structure of the argument. Here the statement, Allowing this would be as disastrous as clues us into the authors opinion. Assumption: One needs maturity and experience to design curricula. If the assumption were true, the argument would be strengthened. Check the answer choices, and look for one that affirms the assumption. (A) is just a restatement of the evidence; this choice adds no new information. In (B) the argument made an analogy: Allowing students to make their own curricula is as disastrous as letting 3-year-olds choose their own diets. If an argument uses an analogy to make a point, it had better do so effectively. The better the analogy, the stronger the argument. This choice does strengthen the argument by showing the analogy to be true. But the question asks for the best strengthener and a more relevant strengthener may be present. (C) is a classic faulty comparison choice; it is also out of scope. The author doesnt distinguish between local high school students and average teenagers. Moreover, the focus is on experience and maturity, not intelligence. (D) shifts the focus of the argument from who should or should not design curricula to what kind of curricula is best. Notice the scope change in this choice. Its tempting, especially since it brings up an intelligent point about tailoring to individuals, but thats topic for a different discussion. The best strengthener is (E), citing the experience needed to design curricula.
Five Reasons to Try Online Tutoring
Five Reasons to Try Online Tutoring Improving Academic Performance Over the past year, weâve begun offering online tutoring, in addition to our core in-person tutoring. Weâve noticed something interesting â" online tutoring seems much less popular among students than it should be (in our opinion). Every once in a while, someone requests an in-person tutor but we donât have one available, and we thus suggest they try online tutoring. However, in almost all cases, even when we offer free online tutoring for one hour to encourage them to give it a try, they decline to do so and search for a tutor from a different company that theyâll have to pay full price for. However, in the few cases where a student requests an online tutor directly, or in the extremely rare case where a student agrees to try online tutoring when they had originally requested an in-person tutor, the actual tutoring experience seems to go very well. In fact, our online math and physics tutor, Sam, has now done over 15 hours of online tutoring with one particular Calculus 3 student who had originally requested an in-person tutor â" but this is rare. This suggests to us that, even with all of the incredible technology available today, which makes online tutoring a very real, viable competitor to the in-person tutoring experience, most students arenât willing to try it out. However, there are five clear reasons why you should try online tutoring: #1 Online Tutoring Platforms Are More Effective, and Cheaper, Than Ever The most important reason to try online tutoring is that technology has reached a point where the experience tends to go very well. With lightning fast internet speeds widely available, you can see or hear your tutor through internet video or audio chat, see a virtual whiteboard, upload PDF homework files, and share screens easily. At MyGuru, we also equip our tutors with electronic pen/tablets, so they can effectively write on the screen, just like they are writing on paper. We even equip some of our students with such tablets. So, both parties can âmark-upâ materials they are viewing on the screen (via the annotate feature). At MyGuru, we use WebEx for online math, physics, statistics, and test prep tutoring, but many other programs, such as GlobalMeet, GoToMeeting, and JoinMe, are available. Of course, you can also use Skype or Google Hangouts. We created a video to highlight the online tutoring experience at MyGuru here. At the end of the day, many of the online tutoring platforms, and in particular, the ones that require you to pay a reasonable monthly free, come pretty close to approximating an in-person tutoring experience. #2 Online Tutoring is Incredibly Convenient Consider a situation where you are meeting a tutor just five minutes from your house. You still have the 5 minute commute there and back. Plus, you canât just show up exactly on time, in case you hit traffic or are otherwise delayed on the way. So, on average, you need to be there 5-10 minutes early. With online tutoring, you avoid all that. Each one hour session probably saves you 15-20 minutes in âtravelâ time. In addition, when you begin working with a new tutor, you avoid that awkward initial introduction, or the need to let a stranger into your home for the first time. You can get tutored in your pajamas, if you prefer. #3 You Get Access to the Best Available Tutor At MyGuru, I have a particular GMAT tutor who I wish every new potential GMAT student lived closed to, because heâs the best GMAT tutor in Chicago that we have available. Iâd like to match everyone with him. Now, if everyone was willing to try online GMAT tutoring, that would be a reality. As it stands, unless youâre comfortable traveling to Lincoln Square for GMAT tutoring, itâs difficult for us to match you with John (the aforementioned expert GMAT tutor). #4 Sessions are Recordable, and Can Be Reviewed Later One of the little known benefits of online tutoring is that many online tutoring platforms (or, at least many of the ones that you pay for) allow you to record each and every session. As a student, this means you can go back and review the session on your own. This is a particularly powerful studying strategy, and reduces the need to vigorously take notes during a session. Instead, you can simply focus on listening to your tutor, and go back to review the session via video if you need to. #5 Online Tutoring is More Cost Effective Finally, at the end of the day, I admit that in-person tutoring is slightly better than online tutoring. You can see your tutorâs face in person, read body language, etc. With in-person tutoring, a glitch in your internet service doesnât result in a lost audio or video feed, and interrupt the tutoring session. But, thatâs why, at least at MyGuru, we price online tutoring at a 10-15% discount to in-person tutoring, saving you money. On balance, we are surprised that more students donât ask or at least consider online tutoring. What are your thoughts regarding online tutoring? Visit our online tutoring page for more information and to request an online tutor!
